Marvel Superhero Pillow

I can hardly believe that this day has come. It has been almost a year since I originally started designing the superhero logo squares, and now my DC and Marvel Pillows are both done! As I mentioned when I posted my DC Superhero Pillow, I had initially planned on making a blanket with 25 Superhero logos, but I ended up changing directions. I’m so happy with my two pillows, and they can be easily customized with any four logos you’d prefer. All 25 of my logos are available on Etsy.

To make this pillow you will need the following supplies:

Yarn for the front logos (colors will vary based on the logos selected, and the full list of my selections are below)

Fabric for the back (approx. 1 yard square in a coordinating fabric of your choice – mine was from Joann’s)

Zipper (24″ All purpose zipper, in a color that will hide well in the fabric of your choice) [Affiliate Link]

Thread (black or white, depending on the colors of your fabric and yarn edging) [Affiliate Link]

28″x 28″ Pillow Form [Available at Hobby Lobby, Joanns, etc]

5.0 mm (US H) crochet hook [Affiliate Link]

Yarn Bobbins [Affiliate Link]

Iron and Ironing Board [Affiliate Link]

Blocking Boards [Affiliate Link]

Blocking Pins [Affiliate Link]

Sewing Machine and cutting supplies [My recommendations]

Optional Equipment – I did’t use these for this project, but it would have been much easier if I did. This yarn management system will make keeping your skeins of yarn untangled much less of a nightmare.

Complete the graphs for your chosen four superhero logos in sc intarsia. Once each square is completed, it will need to be blocked. For help with blocking, visit my post with instructions for blocking acrylic yarn. Because the backs of the squares will be hidden inside the pillow, you will notice that I did not weave in my ends from all of the color changes. Rather, I just knotted them to keep them from coming undone.

To join the squares together, you will be single crocheting between two layers with right sides facing together. I chose black for the joining of this pillow and yellow for the joining of the DC pillow. You can see in the above pictures how a bright or dark color influences the final look. As you’re beginning to join the squares together, you will want to be very careful when you lay them together, ensuring that you have lined them up correctly. Once correctly lined up with right sides facing, start at any of the outside edges and join together two stitches with a standing single crochet.

Moving along the edge, single crochet in each stitch, joining the two squares together.

When you reach the end of the first two squares, line up to the next two squares. Single crochet in the first stitch of the next two squares, making sure to pull the sc tight and keep the squares lined up.

When the vertical connections are complete, carefully unfold the squares and then refold to connect on the horizontal axis.

Working across in the same manner, sc in each stitch. When you reach the center joinings, sc in each end spot, crossing over the join from the other direction.

Once connected, the squares can be laid out flat. As a final step, sc in each stitch around the entire outside. The final large square of four graphs should measure approximately 28”x28”.

Wash and iron fabric for the back side of the pillow. Cut fabric to 29” wide by 31” long. Cut 2” strip off the bottom to have a 29”x29” square and a 29”x2” strip. The zipper will be sewn in this gap between the large square and the bottom strip.

Pin the zipper right side down to the top side of the bottom edge of the fabric square. Using a zipper foot on the sewing machine, sew along the edge as close to the zipper as you can. Once sewn, iron the large square along zipper edge.

Line the bottom strip up with the other side of the zipper, making sure that it is facing the correct direction.

Flip the strip onto the top of the zipper, pinning, sewing, and ironing as with the other side.

After the zipper is sewn in, there will be a small gap on either side between the fabric pieces. With the right sides facing each other, sew along the edges to close the gaps. After this, the front and back sides are completed. Prior to sewing the sides together, partially unzip the zipper so that you will be able to turn it right side out.

With right sides facing each other, pin fabric to yarn. The yarn will stretch as you sew it, so make sure to stretch it to the right points prior to pinning. Sew around all four sides, watching how much the yarn stretches, being careful not to let it stretch too far.

After you’ve sewn around all four sides, turn the pillow inside out and stuff with the pillow form.

These pillows are such a fun addition to my living room, and are great for leaning against if you like to sit on the floor. Happy Crafting!
