Chunky Floor Basket

Back at the beginning of the year, I fell victim to 50% off Loops and Threads yarn at Michaels with free shipping, and ordered six skeins of multicolored chunky yarn with no plan. For months, this yarn has been sitting on my shelf without a plan. For a while, I felt like I should have ordered either more or less, because I could have made something nice and squishy like a rug or a scarf, but I’m so happy I didn’t, because it turned out to be the perfect amount of yarn for this chunky floor basket! I wanted to make something to donate for a Silent Auction at work, and was trying to think of something widely appealing, and am so thrilled with how it turned out! It may have taken a little trial and error, but I think it’s perfect. I just hope someone else at my office thinks so too when it goes on sale next week!

This project is relatively beginner-friendly, and works up very quickly. Due to the nature of the chunky yarn, the project will fly by! If you’ve never worked with yarn like this before, be careful not to split it as you’re crocheting.

To complete this project, you will need to know the following stitches (click on links for video tutorials): magic circle, sc, sc inc, ch, sl st

You will also need the following supplies:
15 mm (US P/Q) crochet hook [Affiliate Link]
Jumbo Tapestry Needle [Affiliate Link]
Stitch Markers [Affiliate Link]
Loops and Threads Chunky, Color #4, Seaside (6 skeins) [Available at Michael’s]

The final basket measures about 12″ tall and 14″ across, with handles approximately 6″ long each.

This basket is completed crocheting in the round. This means that there is no slip stitch join at the end of each round. To keep track of each round, I recommend using a stitch marker.

Round 1: Magic circle, 6 sc into circle, pull circle tight (6)
Round 2: sc inc in each stitch (12)
Round 3: *sc inc, sc* repeat around (18)
Round 4: *sc inc, sc* repeat around (27)
Round 5: *sc inc, 2 sc* repeat around (36)
Round 6: *sc inc, 3 sc* repeat around (45)
Rounds 7-17: sc in each stitch (45)
Round 18: sc in the next 17 stitches, ch 6 and skip the next 5 spaces, sc in the next 18 stitches, ch 6 and skip the next five spaces (35 sc plus two ch 6 sections)
Round 19: sc in each stitch around, placing 7 sc in the ch 6 spaces (47)
Round 20: sl st in each stitch, tie off and sew in ends (47)

I can’t wait to find out where this basket’s new home will be! If it was staying with me, it would live next to my couch so that I could throw blankets, remotes, yarn, crochet hooks, and anything else that usually ends up cluttering the coffee table or cushion next to me.

Update: I completed a second basket in an alternate colorway – Loops and Threads Chunky in Stone Washed. Love it just as much as the original version!
