Batman Wall Hanging

When I made drastic changes to my superhero blanket plan and made a DC pillow instead, there were a few completed squares that were no longer going to be used. Among those was a Batman mask. Given my love for Batman, I just couldn’t discard him, and had to find some use for the square. So, I had the idea to make a wall hanging out of it, and it was so much simpler than I had even hoped it could be.

To complete this you will need the following materials:

Worsted weight yarn in the desired colors (I used Red Heart Super Saver in Bright Yellow, Black, and White)

5mm (US H hook)

Yarn Bobbins (not necessary, but nice for using in intarsia to keep yarn manageable)

Yarn needle for sewing in ends

A wooden dowel, cut in half (I used a saw and then sanded down the ends)

My preferred brands for these and other crochet items are listed with the products I love.

Optional Equipment – I did’t use these for this project, but it would have been much easier if I did. This yarn management system will make keeping your skeins of yarn untangled much less of a nightmare.

For instructions on how to make the graph, you can reference my first post regarding the squares, or watch a video on single crochet intarsia. I have also posted instructions for how to block acrylic projects, demonstrated with these squares. The chart for the Batman mask and 24 other superhero logo charts are available for sale on my Etsy page.

Once the graph is done, it needs to be attached to the dowels. This will be done using sc around the dowel, as demonstrated in the following photos. It can feel a little uncomfortable while you’re holding it, but as long as you keep the yarn loose, you will be fine.

You will attach both the top and the bottom dowels in the same manner, with the only differing being the way you finish it. After crocheting across the top dowel, ch 50 and slip stitch to the opposite side. This will function as your means of hanging it. For finishing the bottom, you can tie off as normal.

All in all, this isn’t a too involved project, and can be made with any number of designs, even things that aren’t superheroes (gasp!). If you’re going to design your own graph, the size of mine is 50×50 squares, and when completed with sc is about 14″x14″ after being blocked.
